This year we are dong something new and exciting in our classroom! We are turning our classroom into our own little town! Each student will have a job to do to make our town successful. The students will apply for their top 3 jobs after hearing what jobs will be offered. I will then take those choices and assign students their jobs. There will be specific things they will have to do throughout the week for their job. These will just be little things and will not hinder our learning, but in fact enhance our learning! The jobs the children will be able to choose from include: lawyer, police officer, store clerk, judge, nurse, banker, postal worker, and cleaning crew. I will be telling the children the expectations for each job so they know before they apply for those jobs. We will be using paper clips for money (small clips are worth $1 and bigger clips are worth $5). Kids can go to the bank to exchange smaller clips for larger clips so they do not have as many smaller clips. We will also be having "court" once a week. Our police officers will be handing out speeding tickets or other tickets for students not following our classroom rules. The judge will then decide an appropriate amount consequence for each ticket (I will be overseeing this to make sure they are fair). We will also have a store open at the end of the week and children can go into the store with their "money" and purchase different items available. Our nurse will help getting bandaids for children and helping children down to the nurse if they need to go. They will not be applying bandaids. Our postal workers will be delivering any mail around the classroom from our classroom post office and will be delivering any notes to the office. Our cleaning crew will help keep our classroom clean at the end of the day and help me empty the trashcan at the end of the day as well! I am really looking forward to this as I think it will be fun for the kids and also a great learning experience for them as well! We will be working with money (not only the amounts but also talking about saving our money and not spending it all right away), talking about being responsible, working as a team to keep our town going strong, along with many other things! We will get our town up and running as we get into our regular classroom routine. If you every have any questions or concerns about this, please feel free to contact me.
